National titles nothing new for Mann family
PORT PERRY -- To have two National Champions in the same sport living under one roof is a rare accomplishment.
To have those same two repeat as Nationals Champions takes it to another level.
But that's what the Mann household in Port Perry has accomplished, after both father, Dave, and son, Mike, were crowned Canada's best in their respective age divisions at the recent Canadian National Waterski Championships that were held in Calgary.
"I don't know if there is another sport where a father and son have won together," says Dave, who was tops among the 54-60 age group while son, Mike, won the 14-17 age division.
Back in 2000, the duo also turned the tricked, topping the podium in their divisions.
For Mike, winning gold this time around was sweet justice after just missing out last year and having to settle for the bronze.
"I think I was one of the favourites," said the 17-year-old. "I was close last year and the kid who beat me moved on to the next division. Last year I won bronze but it was very close.
"This time is was almost like I was skiing at home," he said of how relaxed he felt after strapping on the slalom ski.
